Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn), Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), and Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) grew up together in a Boston tenement. Dave suffered sexual abuse, while his friends escaped major trauma - until now. Twenty-five years later, the three friends reunite, as Jimmy's 19-year-old daughter is murdered, Sean and his cop partner (Laurence Fishburne) are assigned to the case, and Dave discovers the murder is somehow connected to his own traumatic past.
