Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), a small-town high school English teacher, is
wrongly outed as gay by a former student (Matt Dillon) who wins an Oscar for
his portrayal of a gay war hero and cites Brackett as his inspiration. Comedy
ensues in Brackett's private life and throughout town as he works to stop the
rumors that are upsetting his fiancee (Joan Cusack), mother (Debbie
Reynolds), and the school principal (Bob Newhart). His troubles are
compounded by the flood of reporters, one of whom (Tom Selleck) is gay and
interested in more than just the story.

Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt) journeys to climb the Himalayas, leaving his
pregnant wife behind in Austria. War breaks out while he's gone, and he is
placed in a prisoner-of-war camp. Harrer escapes to Tibet where he befriends
the young Dalai Lama and watches as the Tibetan/Chinese confrontation
escalates.
