sisters, is doomed by tradition to spend her life looking after her ramrod 
mother, while her true love perversely weds her older sister, Rosaura. Tita 
is only able to experience life through the discipline of the kitchen and 
the lives of her sisters: one, a general; the other, a mother. The film 
covers 40 years of the three sisters' lives and reflects the nature of 
Mexican cooking: like water for chocolate, which must be brought to boil 
three times, the characters continually bubble and boil over.
