Hidden Fortress (1958)
October 10, 2003 at 7:30 and 10:30pm in 10-250.

Exhilarating setpieces and captivating images ... this is the film George Lucas based Star Wars on. Shame he didn't borrow Kurosawa's editing skills too.
      -- Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian.

WINNER, Silver Bear, Berlin International Film Festival.

Two great clans clashing for control of an Empire. A Princess and leader of her people, on the run. Two funny men, one of them short. Imposing planetary landscapes. And a climactic swordfight between two great generals who once had a long and respectful relationship.

Sounds like Star Wars, doesn't it? And well it should, as George Lucas "borrowed" many elements from this classic Kurosawa film. Featuring the clever use of wipes to transition between scenes, this is the legendary Japanese master's first widescreen film, in anamorphic Tohoscope.

Starring Toshiro Mifune, a frequent Kurosawa collaborator, as the wise old general. Experience his heart-wrenching sacrifice to save the Princess, gaze upon breathtaking landscapes, and feel the excitement of a campfire ceremony.

These shows of Star Wars and The Hidden Fortress are made possible by funding from the MIT Japan Program.
